Heating Report 46, Some Statistics
Date: 3/30/2010
Heating Time: 60 minutes
Total: 60 minutes
Heating Days: 34
Total Days: 45
Total Minutes: 4052 (67 hours
Average Heating Minutes per Day: Just over 90 minutes
Average Heating Minutes per Participating Day: 119
Longest Single Heating Day: 2/26/2010, with 600 minutes
Almost a fourth of the total time came over the two days that I was sick. I had a bad chill and fever, so I kept the heating pad on for most of the time I was awake one day and about half the time I was awake the next.
The orginal study that I read, by Dr. Vogeli, had participants heat themselves in buckets of 116 degree F water for 21 consecutive days. This provided contraception for an average of six months after the two-month spermatogenesis delay.
My study, measuring the related sperm counts, differs in several ways. First the sitz baths, while initially 116 degrees F, are unlikely to have stayed that hot for very long. I use a heating pad, wrapped in a way that delivers a steady 108-110 degrees F. Second, participants in her study spent 45 minutes heating per day for 21 consecutive days. My longest consecutive period was 16 days, although I've heated a total of 34 days in the 45 days since my little study began. I've also averaged twice the daily heating time as Dr. Vogeli's participants, which I hope will make up for the lower temperature and shorter consecutive streaks.
One of the big reasons I'm recording this is that I've successfully used the heat method for several years now. I know, and have known, that I am not as exact or regular as the participants in other studies. The point I'd like to make is that it can be done, it can work, for normal guys.
I think that it is completely doable for many regular people. When I am heating, I usually surf the internet, watch movies, read books, and study. It tends to be my quiet, alone time of the day. I hope that the information here is helpful to others.
Just some thoughts. Anyone out there?

Welcome to Contraception for Dudes!
The purpose of Contraception for Dudes is simple: I aim to spread all the information that I can about birth control from male's side of things.
For far too long, men have put the responsibility birth control or and family planning off on women. There are two major problems with this. First, that means that many women are taking birth control polls that aren't good for their systems. If you really love someone, wouldn't you do whatever you could to help them? Second, many men rely on women to take these pills regularly. This could leave you open to deception and tricks. I'd think that, for your own piece of mind, you'd want to know that you were taking care of things on your own end.
Let's take a look at the basic birth control options available to men in the United States, where I am located.
1. Abstinence: This is what we teach in a lot of our schools. It's also the method that resulted in my high school having the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country. It's a great idea... but its effectiveness drops dramatically the moment genital-to-genital contact is initiated. For anyone actually having sex, this isn't birth control at all.
2. Pulling out: I hear it's as effective as condoms... if you do it right every single time. But that's asking a lot, especially if you're tired, inebriated, or undisciplined. Plus, a lot of people feel like pulling out decreases intimacy.
3. Condoms: The main male birth control option in the United States. If used perfectly, they prevent about 98% of pregnancies (typical use prevents about 85% of pregnancies). They also provide some protection against sexually transmitted infections
-Long-term effectiveness
-Relatively cheap and easy
Drawbacks
-Requires consistent time/effort to be effective
-Will take 70-73 days to kick in, the length of the spermatogenes cycle (that is, it stops sperm production at the beginning of the cycle and the rest of the sperm in the system must pass through before you see the effects of heat begin)
The Challenge: Tonight, I will begin using the Heat Method. I will track how hot, how long, and my sperm counts.
The Rules: I plan to use a heating pad to deliver the heat. This particular one has a 2-hour automatic shutoff and will also turn off if it detects overheating. I will be applying heat as I can, hoping to have an hour or more of heat per day until April.
Since the thought of wearing a heating pad for extended periods of time doesn't seem attractive to me in the summer, I won't be heating during the summer. Previous studies have shown that certain heat application levels will cause lowered sperm production for several months, so I will cease application during the summer.
I will also be tracking my sperm concentration levels. I will try to post a measure of this at least once a month. I'll detail the specifics of my counting method later.
Initial Sperm Count: 353,136,000/mL.
Infertility Status at Fertility Clinic: <20,000,000/mL
WHO Infertility Definition: <1,000,000/mL
Here we go!
